Review: Devilcase Aluminium Bumper for iPhone 6 Plus

Before we go to the unboxing and review of the case, here's some information about the company behind Devilcase.

DevilCase is a mobile accessory company that has quietly been building a strong reputation for its high-quality, exquisitely designed aluminium bumpers. The company has released bumpers for Apple, Sony, HTC, Samsung and Asus phones.
This is not a review unit. It's actually a final retail pack which I am using now for my iPhone 6 Plus. I had the same case for my Sony Xperia Z Ultra too. After using for few months, I decided to get another one for my iPhone 6 Plus too.

On the back of the packaging, you can see the list of items included in the package as well as the installation guide.

A closer look at the installation guide. It's actually quite simple. All you need to do is to put on the 2 aluminium frames on your phone and lock it using the screw provided.

Here come the unboxing part. As I wanted to make my iPhone 6 Plus looks special, I decided to get the red colour. There's few options and you can get it from Connect2U.my.

Once opened, you will see the bumper and a black box.

Inside the black box, you can find 2 pieces of back protector, extra screws, philips screwdriver and the mute switch. I was told by Devilcase that the number of pieces of the back protector is different depending on the model of the case. For iPhone 6 Plus, I got 2 pieces, a red leather and a white carbon fiber. There are few more types apart from what I received, the faux leather, clear protector, and matte protector.

The DevilCase frame is made using high-precision CNC machining. The frame itself exudes a high level of craftsmanship. As for the logo on the side, it's just look great. It's not too bulky either.

If you take a closer look, you will noticed that the case has a matte look. This is because the surface is anodised.

I am going to assemble it now. As you can see, it got 2 frames and all I need to do is to put both of them together and lock it with the screws provided.

Let's look inside of the frame, you will notice that on the corners and sides, there are these shock absorption layers that help to protect the phone from impact.

And it's done. It took me less than 2 minutes to install the bumper. The case is even compatible with the imos Solid EX 3D Corning Glass full coverage screen protector. No forced lift up at all.

A closer look on the front side with the imos Solid EX 3D Corning Glass Screen Protector.

A view on the back.

Side View - the case offers a tactile volume keys button

A closer look at the protruding camera. The case is slightly higher to offer a table protection on the camera lens.

Bottom View - the cutout for both the lightning charging port and 3.5mm headset port is slightly larger to accommodate the use of third party accessories.

While some people might prefer bare back to show off the back of the phone, I would prefer to have it protected. As mentioned earlier, my package consist of the red leather and white carbon fiber protector. And among the 2 materials, I prefer to use the red leather as it offers a greater grip on the phone.

And it's done. It took about 3 minutes to put on the red leather back protector. The installation is pretty easy as the protector is easily removable should you misalign it.

A closer look and you will find the Devilcase logo engraved on the leather protector.

Close up with the protruding camera - The leather protector is at the same level with the camera lens. I did apply a layer of lens protector by imos, so it offers extra protection to the sapphire lens.

So here you go again. The Devilcase Aluminium Bumper for iPhone 6 Plus. A high quality aluminium bumper made made using high-precision CNC machining. Made in Taiwan by Devilcase own facility, thus the quality of the case is assured. Currently selling at RM160 in Malaysia. This case is a perfect option for those who are looking for high quality, premium looks and affordable bumper case.

Pros:
  • Made using high precision CNC machining
  • Made in Taiwan
  • Comes with extra accessories such as back protectors, extra screws in case the existing missing and a screwdriver
  • Highly affordable pricing

Cons
  • Like any aluminium bumper, it slightly affect the signal.

Thank you.

[Review] Xiaomi MiKey

For those who are curious to know what are these small packets, it's the MiKey by Xiaomi. It comes in 6 colours, White, Pink, Orange, Green, Black and Blue.

This is how the miKey looks like - a metal 3.5mm headset dust plug with a black button on top. As you can see, there is a orange colour holder for the miKey. This holder can be attach to your headphone and you can store your miKey in it when you are using the headphones.

So what so special about this miKey? It looks just like a regular dust plug and it feels like one too. Well, the secret lies on the black button on top of it. Xiaomi miKey can be programmed to perform certain tasks such as launching the camera, flashlights, video camera, voice recorder. You can also program it to make calls or even send a default SMS. And if you think the native apps is not to your liking, you can program it to launch 3rd party apps too.

It's easy to install and easy to set up too.

When you got your miKey, the first thing you should do is to download the miKey app. Without the app, you can't actually use it. There are currently 2 versions, Chinese and English.

Once you downloaded the apps, you will see the logo on your mobile screen.

As this is an android app, you can also use it on other phones besides Xiaomi phones. I have not tried it on other phones except my own Xiaomi Redmi, so I can't really comment on the functionality on other phones. But on my Redmi, it's awesome.

Now, when you open the MiKey app, it will prompt you to insert the miKey to the headphone port. Fully insert it to the port and the system will ask you to identify if it's a MiKey or a headset. Select MiKey.

This is the interface of the UI for MiKey apps, a simple and clean UI. You can see a hand holding a phone with a MiKey plugged in. It shows the number of times it has been clicked for the day. The data will be reset at the end of the day and you can even compare your usage with others. Below the statistics, you will see the default setup of the MiKeys. The "1x" means the number of click you will need to activates the apps / actions that you set. The logo is the action that you have chosen.

By default, you can see there are 3 actions being set up. You can add in more actions / apps by clicking the + button. You can add up to 10 actions. For me, anything more than 5x is tough. While you can set the speed of the button clicks, I would have lost counts of the clicks during the selection of the actions. Thus, I only set 5 actions only.

You can set up your preferences by clicking the button on the top right corner of your screen. In the settings menu, you can set the speed of the button clicks. Setting 1000 means it will take ages before you can activate your 10 clicks actions/apps and setting it to 0, you will need to have a super fast fingers to click on the button for activations.

If you have chosen camera as one of the actions, you will need to decide whether to focus before taking photos or not. If you choose not to focus, your camera will immediately snaps when you activate the camera and you will probably end up with a blurry photo. On the other hand, if you choose to select focus before taking picture, your phones will take a moment to focus on the target.

To have a smoother experience for the MiKey, it's advisable to let the apps run on the background. However, this might drains your battery faster. Again, it's up to you to choose between the 2 options, faster response or conserving battery.

To delete the actions, just go to the main page, tap and hold on the actions and you will be able to delete them. To add actions, just tap the plus button at the bottom of the main page and you will see a list of click patterns, ranging from one click to a crazy 10 clicks. For each click pattern you can assign one action or a set of actions. The used patterns will be in grey as shown and the unused patterns will be in white.

That's the basic information about the Xiaomi MiKey. But how does this be used in a practically in our daily life?

For me, I used it mainly as a dust plug since I rarely use a headset. It helps to prevent dust from invading the interior of my phone. I also use it as an extension of the shortcuts to my favourite actions such as launching the camera, recorder, alarms setting, activating QR codes scanner and also clearing the RAM. It's so convenient as I do not need to search for the apps. After using the MiKey for around 2 weeks, I don't think I would want to live without it.

But is this a perfect accessories for my Xiaomi Redmi? While it does provides me the benefits, there are few things that I think Xiaomi might need to look into and improvise. The responsiveness remain  the main issues, there are times when I will need to click more before the phone recognise my clicking. Xiaomi should really look into this matter and to improve on the responsiveness of the MiKey. If they are able to fix this issue, it will definitely be my favourite accessory for my Redmi.

Finally, the million dollar question. Pricing and availability in Malaysia. The official price for the Xiaomi MiKey is RMB4.99 (around RM2.60 or USD0.80). And since the MiKey is not officially available in Malaysia Xiaomi Online Store yet, you either buy it from Xiaomi China or Taobao or other sources. I bought mine from a local seller in lowyat forum since I wanted to save on the hassle of buying from taobao and to save on international shipping. If you are interested to get one too, you can contact him on the following link: https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=3233706&hl=

The seller is also kind enough to sponsor 1 unit for our review. We will give it out as a giveaway in the coming weeks so stay tune for the announcement in our Facebook page (Connect2U Official Page).

Hope you like the article and do enjoy the video on how the MiKey actually works.

Thank you.

Unboxing of Xiaomi Mi Power Bank (10400mAh)

Been searching all over the forum and couldn't find an article about the review of the power bank. These are some of those I managed to find :
10400mAh power Bank

So I decided to write up one since I just received my hard purchased unit from Xiaomi Malaysia. One of the proud owner. Hope you like it.

I bought 2 units and a Clear screen protector to make it more than RM82 so I got free postage for it. They packed it in a environmental friendly recycled box.

Same goes with the individual box. Unlike those in China that get a plastic transparent box, this is what I received. Don't really care about how it was packed as long as it's not faulty.

Inside the box, only a 10400mAh silver power bank, a short 22cm cable and a user manual

The specs is written on the bottom part while the upper part, you will see a Power Button, 4 LED lights battery indications, microUSB port and a USB port.

The Specifications written on the bottom part

10400mAh
Model: NDY-02-AD
Input: 0.5V / 2.0A
Output: 5.1V / 2.1A
Rated Capacity: 3.6V / 10400mAh (37.44Wh)
Manufacturer: Xiaomi Corporation
Producer: Zimi Corporation

Some of the key features of Xiaomi Power bank includes the pass through charging which do not commonly found in most power banks in the market. So what so hype about this feature? This basically means you can charge your power bank and while charging your phone with it.

Charging the phone with the xiaomi power bank. And to be more adventorous, I tried charging the xiaomi power bank with another power bank while charging the phone. And it works just fine. So it's cool to have such features especially if you have limited power output to charge 2 devices at the same time.

Now going into the INTERESTING part. The dissambling of the power bank. Wanted to sacrifice one unit for the sake of humanity, but luckily i found someone who did it and post it in youtube. Credits to C4ETech for their photos.

This is the weight of the Xiaomi 10400mAh power bank - 254gm

It's easy to open up the power bank. All you need is a screwdriver and a knife or thin metal piece. Once you removed the aluminium chasis, you can see 4 batteries with the circuit board. On the battery, you can see "LGABB41865" written on it. And after a checking it, it's indeed battery from LG with 3.7V 2600mAh. Times 4 units and you will get 10400mAh. With the conversion of energy up to 93%, you can easily charge around 3-4 times of a your smartphones.

What's good about the power bank apart from those being claimed by Xiaomi
  • Ridiculously cheap
  • Hard aluminium enclosure that able to absorb impacts of 50kg
  • Battery capacity as per claimed

What's not so good about the power bank?
  • Single USB port for charging, not suitable for those who have more than 1 devices need "food"
  • While it's not important to have a torch like most of the power bank in the market, it does comes in handy if it comes with this feature.

Different types of Screen Protector - Which one are you looking for?

When we discuss about screen protectors, there are a lot of myths and facts that come to our mind.
The most common one are:

"Why do I need it?" "Do I really need one?" "Which type should I get?" "What is the differences?" And many more....

There are many types of screen protectors in our market and I am sure readers would be familar with some of them.

1. PET film screen protector - Clear / Matte

PET Film Screen Protector
Oleophobic PET Film Screen Protector by imos Taiwan

The most common type being used/sold/available in the market is the PET film screen protector. It's the cheapest among all and you can buy it in almost any mobile phone accessories shop. • Wet installation poses high risk of damaging the phone for some people
  • Longer installation time as a whole. Even after finishing the installation, you are advised to leave the phone unused for 24 hours to prevent any damage due to water.
  • Difficult to clean

Liquid Screen Protector
Liquid Screen Protector with nano technology

Nano coating technology that shines and protects your portable device screen in liquid form. One simple application is claimed to repel dust and stains for up to 6 months.
Among other claims by most liquid screen protector company includes:
  • Provides scratch-resistant surface for normal wear and tear
  • Screen protection up to 2x stronger than traditional screen protection film
  • Preserves touch screen sensitivity sharpness and vividness of screen display
  • Anti-Static / High Gloss
  • Water spill-resistant
  • Smooth, dirt repellent surface
  • Best to protect any glasses of Smartphone, Tablet PC, LCD/LED (Camera, Laptop, TV) Screen without size boundary

While these are the common features, there are no further proof that it really works. We tried one of the top liquid screen protector (made in Japan) and applies it on 2 devices, the iPhone 5 (gorilla glass with oleophobic coating) and Asus Fonepad 7" 1st Generation (tempered glass with no oleophobic coating).

Results:
iPhone 5 - it works like charm, after applying the liquid screen protector, the screen was smooth, repel dust and stains and scratch proof using a car key
Fonepad 7 - not working, while the screen looks shinier and smooth, there is no sign that it increases the protection against dust, stains and scratches

Conclusion: From our test, we are not able to determine whether the liquid screen protector really works as they claimed. The gorilla glass has the basic properties of being smooth, dust and stains resistance as well as protection against scratches. With the application of the liquid sp, it remains the same effect. So, if I were to make a position on this, I would rather said, it enhanced the features of the gorilla glass. It works with any devices with gorilla glass or oleophonic coated devices, but limited features on those normal tempered glass screen.

Tempered Glass Screen Protector
What is tempered glass?
It's a type of safety glass processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared with normal glass. Tempering puts the outer surfaces into compression and the inner surfaces into tension. Such stresses cause the glass, when broken, to crumble into small granular chunks instead of splintering into jagged shards. The granular chunks are less likely to cause injury.

Corning Gorilla Glass protector for Galaxy S5 by imos Taiwan

A tempered glass screen protector is highly demanded type of screen protector in recent days. Many has chose to use the tempered glass screen protector for a few reasons, mainly
  • Oleophobic coating to reduce fingerprint marks, stains
  • better protection against drops and impacts
  • everyone using it now, so I must use it too
  • every seller recommend it
  • and many more creative and innovative sales talk

While I don't denied the protection is better than a normal PET film, I do have some reserves against the other claims. For instance, I did try comparing an OEM tempered glass screen protector oleophobic coating with a PET film oleophobic coated screen protector and finds that the effect is better on the PET film. This shows that not all glass screen protector are better than an oleophobic PET film.
There are few sub types of tempered glass in the market.
  • Soda lime glass
  • Gorilla glass
  • Asahi Glass

Soda lime glass
Most widely available in the market due to many factory around the world is offering OEM for it. You can differentiate a soda lime glass by looking at the side of the glass. You can see green or blue color on it. It's the least expensive type and many resellers are selling it in the market. However, a lot of the company/reseller took advantage of the limited knowledge of consumers by offering misleading information to them. Among those commonly found misleading information includes:

  • SCRATCH proof
  • EXPLOSION proof
  • FINGERPRINTS & STAINS proof
  • MADE FROM GORILLA GLASS
  • MADE FROM ASAHI GLASS

The reason I said it's misleading consumers are, there are currently no screen protector which is scratch proof. The next time you are going to buy a screen protector, bring a piece of sandpaper with you. If a seller tells you that it's scratch proof, use the sandpaper and try scratching it and you will know if it's really as it claims. And if it does, do share with me the brand of the sp, I would like to have it for all my devices too. On "explosion" proof? How are they going to proof it? Setup a C4 on the phone? Fingerprints and stains proof? Ok, with most tempered glass sp coated with the oleophobic coating, it helps a lot in reducing the stains but for those with sweaty palm and oily hand, you might still have minimal stains on it.
As for the MADE FROM GORILLA GLASS and ASAHI GLASS claim, with the price that they are selling, it's hard to believe its made of the 2 most reputable glass provider in the world. Ask them of the proof and none will able to provide to you. And from the packing, if it doesn't mentioned anything about Gorilla Glass or Asahi Glass, just take it as a normal soda lime glass.

Gorilla Glass
Probably the best in the industry. With Corning being responsible for more than 33 brands for mobile devices screen, the corning gorilla glass is the world's most trusted protection with bulk of features and better protection. It offers more than twice the durability compare to a soda lime glass. As for their claim on superiority, this is the one that I find most impressive.

With almost all the major brand in mobile devices industry using Corning Gorilla Glass as their preferred screen, I see no other reason why it's not the best in the industry. I might be wrong about their quality, but I doubt the giants such as Apple, Samsung, HTC, LG, Xiaomi and others are wrong.
Now the question is, how do we differentiate between gorilla glass and soda lime glass? As mentioned earlier, on soda lime glass, you can see the green or blue color on the side. For Corning Gorilla Glass, it's clear, transparent glass on all sides.

Asahi Glass
Another big shot in the glass industry. Asahi is from Japan and we knows Japanese is one of the most hardworking group. We also knows Japanese companies always comes with quality product. Same goes with Asahi. In 2013, Asahi Glass Corportation (AGC) announced their Dragontail tempered glass. Said to be even stronger then the Corning gorilla glass 2, the Dragontail is one of the main competitor for Corning. Unfortunately, there aren't any news that any screen protector are made from Dragontail glass. If you come across any, do share with me, I would like to get to know more from the company.

Conclusion:
I hope with this lengthy article, it will helps you to know more about screen protectors. It's up to you to choose on which type to apply on your phone but at least you made the right choice based on the correct information. Due to the high competition in the market, it's normal for resellers to try their best to use creative and innovative statements to convince you to buy from them. If you are not prepared, then you are the one to be blamed for being a victim.

Final points to take note:
  • No screen protector in the current market is scratch proof, don't buy from any seller who tell you that theirs is.
  • Not all tempered glass have better oleophobic coating than a PET film. If oleophobic coating is what you looking for, make sure you search for the best one.
  • Not all tempered glass are created the same. My best recommendation goes to Corning gorilla glass if your budget permited. It offers the most complete satisfaction.
  • Going to a market place without any knowledge on the item you are looking for might leads you to potential lies. Do some research before going out of the door. This applies in our daily live too.

"Why do I need it?" "Do I really need one?" "Which type should I get?" "What is the differences?"

Hopefully you got the answer by now after reading the article. If you have any other questions, feel free to comment. Will try if I can answer or others can help too

Review: imos Solid EX Corning Glass Screen Protector for HTC One M8

We can find a lot of screen protector in the market, but if you are looking for the hardest one, the best of the best, CORNING will be the brand. According to Corning, Gorilla Glass is on more than 2400 product models, 2.4billion devices and 33 major brands. And because of this, there are a lot of screen protector seller who claimed that they are selling a Gorilla Glass Screen Protector. But do you aware that, most are not authorised by Corning and the product might even be a counterfeit product!

Today, we would like to introduce IMOS, a screen protector manufacturer that are widely known in Taiwan for their highest quality screen protector. IMOS is working with a public listed company in Taiwan to product Corning Screen Protector - IMOS Solid EX series.

This is specially designed for the latest HTC One M8 model. There aren't any counterfiet product being seen in Malaysia market but based on our intel in Taiwan, some counterfeits products have been found lurking in the market. In order to prevent consumers being victimised, imos has include a hologram sticker of authenticity on every boxes of the Solid EX Corning.

There is also a protective sticker on the side of the box, to prevent unauthorised personel to open and replace the content. You can find these items in the box.

Alcohol swab, item pack, cleaning cloth, screen protectors in the package

inside the item pack, you can find a dust removing tools

on the right side, you can find a high quality microfiber cleaning cloth and a pack of screen protector consisting the top and bottom speaker grill protector, camera lens protector as well as the corning glass screen protector

there is also a dust removal sticker alongside the corning glass screen protector inside the pack. You can use it to remove any dust that are on the screen anytime during the installation

If we take a closer look at the Corning glass screen protector, you will notice that the side of the glass is transparent while most glass screen protector in the market is blue or green. If it's colored, that means the glass is not a corning gorilla glass but a normal tempered glass made with soda lime extract. While both are made from glass, Corning offered twice the durability between the two different glass. (For those who are interested to know more about corning gorilla glass, you can visit thier official website athttp://www.corninggorillaglass.com). You will also see the word "imos" being engraved on the glass. The logo is engraved after the strict quality check on each piece of screen protector before being packed. This is to ensure every pieces of the screen protector meet the requirements of the features claimed on the back of the box. (high transparency, delicate touch, perfect adhesion, oleophobic coating, rounded borders, shatter proof)

We saw there are many pieces of screen protectors and to avoid confusion on which part it belongs to, we will proceed to the installation process.

First we will need to clean the dual camera on the HTC One M8.  The screen protector was put aside while we clean the lenses.

First, we install the ultrapixel lens

Followed by the secondary lens

Next, we proceed to the front part where we will clean the aluminium speaker grill and lens

Starting with the front camera lens, once installed, then we won't need to worry about any accidental scratch anymore

Installing the speaker grill screen protector for the top and bottom part. You will notice that the size of the screen protector is very precise. imos is adopting the laser cut technology for the cutting of each screen protectors since mid 2013. They are also the first in the industry to adopt the technique to ensure each and every pieces are at perfect cut

During the cleaning and installation of the Corning glass screen protector, it's advisable that the phone to be turned off or you will find yourself activating the motion sensor of the HTC One M8.

Once the surface of the screen is cleaned and free of dust, we will apply the Solid EX Corning. Slowly remove the first layer of the film and place the protector on the screen.

Make sure the alignments on the 4 corners is correct, then slowly place it down, the adhesion will automatically sticks on the screen

In the event you find any dust trapped under the protector, you can remove it using the dust remover. Slowly lift up the protector and remove the dust

Once it's done, this is the final result. The Solid EX Corning glass screen protector is hardly noticable as it's cut to perfection. With the Top and bottom speaker grilled installed, the gap difference between the screen and the top/bottom is less than 0.2mm.

And like any other imos products, the Solid EX Corning glass screen protector is also coated with oleophobic coating. The coating will help to greatly reduces fingerprint marks, facial oil stains and other smudges caused by our hand/fingers/environment. This feature offers a cleaner and clearer screen. You can even use the screen as a mirror to organize your hair.

Finally, for those who are using the dot view case from HTC, rest assured that the touch motion is working perfectly with the imos Solid EX Corning glass screen protector.

Conclusion:
Most of the new devices in the market boasts a HD screen, from retina display on iphones, Super AMOLED on Samsung and Super LCD3 on HTC. While this is one of the main features to attract buyers, it's sad to see that most people are using a normal screen protector and ended with fingerprint marks, facial oil and scratches. For others, they are using the matte type of protector which leads to a poor viewing screen. Luckily, we now has a new option, using imos range of screen protector that offers oleophobic coating, which resembles the actual screen. And with Solid EX Corning, it even offers the same delicate touch on the screen of the device.
imos Solid EX Corning is available in Malaysia at RM159.

For more information, visit imos Malaysia Official Facebook Page

Here are some videos made to test on the imos Solid EX Corning glass screen protector on an iPhone 5S

(a drop test on a tarmac floor and we saw the screen protector cracks without damaging the actual screen)

We hope you like the article.
